Until 1840 this 300-year-old inn was known as The New Star.
Its name was changed when Horse Guards on security duties in nearby Petworth Park began frequenting it. At least, that's one version. Another is that the same body of soldiers used it as their regular watering hole while transporting gold from London to Portsmouth
