The fire is in an auxiliary building at the site which is not being used to generate electricity. The main turbine generator hall is not involved in the fire. Scottish Power, which manages the site, say power supplies will not be affected. A small number of workers were on site when the fire started. All have been safely accounted for and there are no reports of any injuries. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus operated an inbuilt fire suppression system in the building which knocked down most of the fire. Ground monitors were also used to bring the fire fully under control, and it is now out. Six fire engines and an Aerial Ladder Platform were mobilised to the scene, plus support vehicles. Sussex Police provided an overview of the fire with footage taken from the South East Air Support Unit helicopter Hotel 900. A cordon was set up around the site for public safety but there was no need for nearby homes to be evacuated. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Police Report
A major fire at Shoreham Power Station has caused local disruption around the A259 in the area.
Sussex Police were called to scene at 8.39pm by West Sussex and Fire Rescue Service who were joined by firefighting colleagues from East Sussex in tackling the blaze. The immediate area was evacuated, but this did not include any private residences, although a couple of people did leave a small boat that was moored in the vicinity. Supt Grenville Wilson from Sussex Police said- "Thankfully, there have been no reports of injuries and the sterling work carried out by our colleagues in the fire service enabled a fairly early decision that a large scale evacuation would not be necessary. We shall, of course, maintain a presence overnight and there are a small number of local road closures. However, unless there is a significant change in the status of the fire, I do not anticipate there will be any more disruptions to the local community." Photo shows the view of the power station from the south west with the fire clearly shown on the infra red image. Taken by the South East Air Support Unit helicopter Hotel 900. Calls came in from 5.15am to a fire at a house in Gratwicke Road, and both that address and houses on either side were temporarily evacuated. The body of a man was found in the first floor flat. It is believed to be that of the occupant who lived alone there, and preliminary indications are that the fire started in that flat. The cause of the fire is is currently unexplained although at this early stage there is no immediate evidence to suggest that it is suspicious. Police will work with fire investigators to examine the circumstances. There are no reports of of any other injuries. Fire Service report Incident: MAN FOUND DEAD IN WORTHING FLAT FIRE A man has been found dead by firefighters attending a flat fire in Worthing this morning. West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service was called to the first floor maisonette in Gratwicke Road at 5.12am this morning after the alarm was raised by a neighbour hearing the windows of the converted terraced house blow out. After dialling 999 the brave neighbour attempted to enter the flat but was beaten back by fire, intense heat and thick smoke. Two fire engines from Worthing were on the scene within minutes and while one team wearing breathing apparatus conducted a search of the property a second crew very quickly brought the fire under control using hose reels to stop it spreading to neighbouring properties. On entering the second floor of the maisonette firefighters discovered one male casualty but unfortunately the man was already deceased. Fire Investigation Officers are currently at the scene working alongside the Police to establish the cause of the fire which is believed to have started in the lounge area of the maisonette. At this stage there is no evidence to suggest that the fire is suspicious. POLICE UPDATE 21 March 2012 Police believe the man who tragically died in a fire at a flat in Gratwicke Road, Worthing, on 19 March is the occupant. The fire is not being treated as suspicious. Although the man has not been officially identified he is believed to be Peter Lester, aged 65. His family have been informed. FIRE SERVICE UPDATE ON FATAL FLAT FIRE IN WORTHING 21 March 2012 Fire investigation officers remained at the scene working alongside the Police to determine the cause of the fire. Due to the extent of the damage the precise cause of the incident is still being established but early indications are that it could have been due to discarded smoking materials. It is thought that the incident was of accidental ignition. The maisonette had two smoke alarms fitted but unfortunately neither of them had batteries in. Had they been in working order the fire might have been detected a lot earlier and it could have saved a life. West Sussex Fire & Rescue service urge residents to ensure they have a working smoke alarm in their property and to make sure it is regularly tested.
